India had been thrashed throughout the 1991-92 tour and arrived at Perth already 3-0 down. The WACA pitch was at its quickest — wide cracks, hard bounce, McDermott and Hughes on top form. India were bowled out for 159 in the first innings; only Tendulkar (15) and Ravi Shastri showed any fight. Australia made 346, leaving India 187 behind. In the second innings the top order again folded against the Australian pace. Tendulkar walked in at 69 for 2 and watched wickets tumble at the other end. Manoj Prabhakar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Pravin Amre and others all fell to short balls. From 159 for 8, Tendulkar added 81 with Kiran More for the ninth wicket — a then-Indian record at Perth — and reached his hundred with a punched drive off McDermott. He fell finally for 114 off 161 balls, hitting 16 fours, before India were dismissed for 240. Australia chased 67 for the loss of one wicket.
