The 2020 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Final in Potchefstroom, South Africa, ended in shocking fashion. Bangladesh defeated India by 3 wickets in a tense match to claim their first-ever U19 World Cup title. However, instead of a celebration of youth cricket, the aftermath was marred by disgraceful scenes.
As Bangladesh players celebrated their historic victory, an altercation broke out between players from both teams. Television footage showed pushing, shoving, and heated exchanges between the two groups of teenagers. Bangladesh players were seen celebrating aggressively in front of Indian players, and some Indian players reacted angrily. Stumps were thrown and there was genuine pushing and shoving that required intervention from support staff and match officials.
India captain Priyam Garg later said he was "disappointed with the behaviour of the Bangladesh players" and accused them of "dirty" celebrations. Bangladesh captain Akbar Ali, to his credit, apologised for the behaviour of some of his teammates, saying "what happened was unfortunate" and that it was not in the spirit of cricket. He maintained that the aggression came from the excitement of winning and was not premeditated.
The ICC took the matter seriously, charging five players — three from Bangladesh and two from India — with breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct. The players received sanctions ranging from fines to community service within cricket. The incident served as a sobering reminder that even youth cricket is not immune to the tensions and rivalries that characterise the senior game.
