Sheffield Cricket Club Formed at Darnall — 1822

1822-05-04n/aFounding of the Sheffield Cricket Club, Darnall, May 18221 min readSeverity: Mild

Summary

In May 1822 a group of Sheffield merchants and industrialists formed the Sheffield Cricket Club at Darnall, on the eastern edge of the town. The club leased a strip from a local landowner and laid out the Darnall ground that would, within five years, host major matches against MCC and Sussex. Sheffield CC is the earliest constituted Yorkshire cricket club of major-match standing.

Background

Yorkshire cricket before 1822 had been a village affair. The industrial wealth of Sheffield, Bradford and Leeds began to underwrite organised major cricket from this point.

What Happened

Cricket had been played in Sheffield informally since the 1750s. The May 1822 founding gave the town its first organised major club. The Darnall ground — on flat land to the east of the town — was opened later that summer. By 1827 it was hosting MCC and Sussex fixtures. Sheffield CC is the foundation institution of Yorkshire cricket.
