In January 1804 a side of Old Etonian East India Company officers played a representative Calcutta XI on the Old Course in Calcutta — the earliest match for which a substantial scoresheet survives in British India. The Calcutta Cricket Club had been founded in 1792, but the 1804 fixture is the oldest with a recorded individual scorecard. It is the foundational document of Indian cricket history.
Cricket in Calcutta was an East India Company social institution. The club operated like a London club transplanted, with a paying membership of officers and merchants.
The Old Etonians side had been forming through the 1803 cold season. The challenge to Calcutta CC was issued at the Asiatic Society in November 1803.
Cricket had reached Bengal with the East India Company in the eighteenth century. The Calcutta Cricket Club was founded in 1792 and is the oldest cricket club outside Britain. Through its first decade the club played informal matches without preserved scorecards; the January 1804 fixture against the Old Etonians is the earliest with a full recorded scoresheet, copied home to England in a Company despatch and reproduced in the British press in 1805. The Etonians won by an innings, helped by a 67 from Robert Vansittart, who would later become a senior Company administrator.

With the Napoleonic blockade at its tightest, willow scarce, professionals diverted to militia service and the betting public's purses thin, only fourteen major matches were played at Lord's all summer. The 1811 season is the clearest measure of cricket's wartime contraction.

By the close of 1812 cricket was being played regularly in both Madras and Bombay — the earliest documented fixtures in either Presidency. Garrison officers and civilian East India Company servants ran the matches; the Madras Gazette and Bombay Courier preserved the earliest scoresheets. The Calcutta game (documented 1804) had been joined by all three Presidency capitals.
Kent vs MCC

On 9-10 September 1813 Kent played the MCC at the Vine, Sevenoaks — the first post-war major match at the historic Kent ground and the start of the Vine's revival as a regular major venue. The Vine had hosted little major cricket since 1808; the September 1813 fixture marked its return to the front rank.
