India's 183 looked light, even on a slow Lord's pitch. The West Indies appeared on top at 50 for 1 with Viv Richards dropping his guard. Madan Lal banged in a short ball just outside off; Richards pulled it skywards; Kapil Dev sprinted back from midwicket and held a 25-yard catch over his shoulder. With Richards's 33 the score read 57 for 3 (Madan Lal having earlier removed Haynes), and the famous WI middle order of Lloyd, Gomes and Bacchus could not dig the side out. Madan Lal finished with 3 for 31 from 12 overs, taking Haynes, Richards and Gomes. Amarnath, the part-time medium pacer, then bowled 7-0-12-3 — the cheapest seven-over spell in any World Cup final — taking the wickets of Dujon, Marshall and finally Holding. Amarnath was named Man of the Match for both his 26 with the bat and his bowling, and was Man of the Tournament. The two of them, with Balwinder Sandhu's early ball that bowled Greenidge through the gate, are the bowlers who turned 183 into the most famous total in Indian cricket.
