Lancashire had not won the County Championship since 1904. The signing of Ted McDonald, the Australian fast bowler from the 1921 Ashes, transformed their attack. McDonald qualified by residence and joined Lancashire in 1924; by 1926 he was the senior bowler in English cricket.
In 1926 Lancashire won the title under Major Leonard Green. McDonald took 175 wickets at 18 in his first full title-winning season. In 1927 they retained, McDonald taking 150 at 21. In 1928 they won a third in a row, with McDonald taking 178 wickets at 19. Across the three years he took over 500 first-class wickets — the most by any pace bowler in the inter-war period.
The batting was led by Ernest Tyldesley (96 hundreds in his career), J.W. Hearne, and Frank Watson. The wicketkeeping was George Duckworth's; he kept for England in 24 Tests. The 1926-28 side averaged 65 wins per season across all matches.
