Andy Roberts's ferocious response to Tony Greig's 'grovel' statement — combined with Viv Richards's batting dominance — turned the 1976 England-West Indies series into an emphatic West Indian statement about the cost of underestimating them.
Tony Greig was English cricket's most flamboyant figure in the 1970s — a South African-born player of genuine all-round quality whose extroversion sometimes led him into territory he couldn't back up. The 'grovel' comment had racial overtones that made it particularly inflammatory to West Indian players.
Andy Roberts was the fastest bowler in cricket — capable of 92-95mph — with a two-speed bouncer: one that looked like a full one and arrived early, and a second that was genuinely quick. Batsmen couldn't distinguish them until it was too late.
West Indies arrived in England motivated by more than cricket. The 'grovel' comment was posted in team dressing rooms. Richards reportedly said he was going to make Greig pay through run-scoring; Roberts and Holding would deal with Greig the batsman.
Before the 1976 series, England captain Tony Greig appeared on ITV and said: 'I like to think that people are building these West Indians up, because I'm not sure they're as good as everyone thinks they are... I intend to make them grovel.' The West Indies players, particularly Viv Richards and the pace attack, treated this as a personal insult. Andy Roberts — not a verbal cricketer but one of the fastest bowlers in the world — responded through his bowling. Roberts targeted Greig with bouncers and throat-high deliveries throughout the series. West Indies won 3-0 with Roberts and Holding their primary weapons. Greig averaged 25 — below his usual standard — and Roberts dismissed him multiple times.

“Greig said what he said. We didn't need to talk about it. We showed him on the cricket field.”
“The grovel comment was the worst thing I ever said publicly. They made me pay for it. And they deserved to.”
“We were motivated like never before. Andy and I both had a score to settle with Tony. We settled it.”
Greig never recovered his pre-1976 standing in cricket. His subsequent involvement in World Series Cricket — signing England players without board approval — ended his Test career. He became a respected commentator for Channel 9 in Australia.
Roberts retired in 1983 having established himself as one of the finest fast bowlers in history. The 1976 series was his and West Indies' statement to the cricketing world: they were the best team in the world and no English captain would make them 'grovel'.
West Indies demolished England 3-0 — the 'grovel' comment the direct inspiration for one of cricket's most motivated team performances. Roberts's response to Greig was largely physical — his bowling at the England captain was genuinely hostile. Greig later acknowledged the comment was his worst public misjudgement.
The 1976 series is remembered as West Indies' formal announcement of their dominance — a dominance that lasted until the early 1990s. Roberts's response to Greig was cricket's most effective refutation of verbal provocation: not through words but through his bowling.
