Overview

The ICC T20 World Cup (originally ICC World Twenty20) is the international championship for Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket. The tournament has become one of the most popular events in world cricket due to the fast-paced, exciting nature of T20 cricket and has been held every two years since its inception in 2007.

History

The tournament was conceived as T20 cricket gained popularity following its introduction in England in 2003. The inaugural event in South Africa in 2007 was a runaway success, with India's victory in the final against Pakistan generating enormous interest. The tournament has since become a key driver of cricket's global expansion, with the 2024 edition in the USA marking a major step in bringing cricket to new markets.

Format Changes

The format has evolved from 12 teams in 2007 to 20 teams in 2024. Early editions featured a Super 8 stage, while later tournaments used group stages followed by knockouts. The 2024 expansion to 20 teams was the largest ever, reflecting the ICC's commitment to growing the game globally.
