ICC/Playing Conditions/Strategic Timeout

Strategic Timeout

T20

A 2.5-minute break taken between overs 6-9 of each innings in T20s, primarily for broadcast advertising but also used for tactical discussions.

Details

The strategic timeout is a compulsory break in T20 cricket, taken between the 6th and 9th over of each innings. It lasts 2.5 minutes.

The timeout was introduced primarily for commercial reasons — to provide a break for TV advertising during the innings. However, teams also use it strategically to discuss tactics, reassess their approach, and give bowlers or batsmen time to regroup.

The timeout is mandatory and cannot be skipped. The on-field umpires ensure it's taken at the appropriate time.

In the IPL, there are additional strategic timeouts — each team can call one timeout during their opponent's innings between overs 6-16.

Historical Evolution

Strategic timeouts were first introduced in the IPL in 2009. They were later adopted in T20I cricket by the ICC. The concept was borrowed from other sports (like American football's TV timeouts) and was designed to increase the commercial viability of T20 cricket.

Current Rule

Mandatory 2.5-minute timeout between overs 6-9 in T20Is. IPL has additional timeouts.
