History of Cricket: From 1700s to Today

cricket evolution

A comprehensive history of cricket — from village greens in England to a global sport worth billions.

Origins (1700s-1800s)

Cricket's origins trace back to south-east England in the late medieval period. By the 1700s, it had become an established sport with the first known Laws of Cricket written in 1744.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787 and became the custodian of the Laws of Cricket — a role it still holds today. Lord's Cricket Ground, established in 1814, became known as the 'Home of Cricket.'

International Cricket Begins (1877-1945)

The first Test match was played between Australia and England at the MCG in March 1877. International cricket expanded slowly — South Africa joined in 1889, West Indies in 1928, New Zealand in 1930, and India in 1932.

The Ashes rivalry between England and Australia became the sport's greatest, while cricket spread throughout the British Empire.

Post-War Expansion (1945-1975)

After World War II, cricket expanded significantly. Pakistan debuted in 1952. Sri Lanka, though a founding ICC member, gained Test status in 1981.

The period saw legendary players like Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, and Viv Richards. West Indies dominated with their fearsome pace attack.

The Commercial Era (1975-2008)

Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket (1977) revolutionized the sport commercially. The first World Cup (1975) established ODI cricket. Colored clothing, night cricket, and TV deals transformed the business of cricket.

India's 1983 World Cup victory under Kapil Dev transformed cricket in the subcontinent, planting the seeds for India's eventual dominance of cricket's economy.

The T20 Revolution (2008-present)

The IPL's launch in 2008 was the biggest disruption in cricket's history. T20 franchise leagues proliferated globally. Cricket became a multi-billion dollar industry.

The World Test Championship (2019) was introduced to give context to Test cricket. Women's cricket grew significantly, with increased professionalism and media coverage.
